Praying mantises are formidable predatory insects, they consume a variety of insects. Their bodies are sticklike and grow to about 3 inches in length – they camouflage well to their surroundings and are typically green to brown in color. Males fly, females usually do not. They are cannibalistic and this does tend to keep their numbers down. They live in a variety of habitats including semi-arid areas but are more abundant in riparian and wooded areas. They are not a danger to humans but will ambush small hummingbirds and lizards. The mantis in this photo was just one inch long.
