PHOTOGRAPH DETAILS

Tawny Cats Eye
Oreocarya fulvocanescens
Family: Borage
AKA: Tawny Cryptantha
Photo taken on: April 18, 2018
Location: Abiquiu, NM
Life Zones: Plains to foothills
Habitat: Dry and disturbed areas, pinyon-juniper woodlands

This perennial herb is one of the first plants to bloom in the spring in the high desert of New Mexico. It is unique as it is native to the four corners area (AZ, UT, CO, and NM) and is found at higher elevations, 5,000’ – 7,000’. This delightful plant is diminutive, standing just 2”- 6” high with bright yellow centered flowers the size of a pencil eraser.
The Navajo traditionally give a decoction of the plant to women following childbirth, it is also used to treat toothaches, coughs, and colds.
Every spring I watch for this plant to flower, it grows on a dry slope adjacent our gate. Pollinators are watching too and are soon landing on the small flowers in search of nectar and pollen. I do my best to help the Tawny Cats-eye to thrive by providing sustenance – I stop on my way in or, out of the gate and share a drink from my water bottle marveling at the hardiness and beauty of this resilient native plant.
