Horses and humans have coexisted for centuries – in the American Southwest it is accepted that the Spanish introduced the modern horse with their arrival to the area in the mid 1500’s. It has been a long and rewarding relationship. For hundreds of years the horse was the mode of transportation, instead of a car in the garage you would have had a couple of horses in the barn. Now we seek out horses for their beauty, strength and intelligence, allowing us to reconnect with ourselves and our history and it’s always a memorable experience.
Mesa Huerfano or, Orhan Mesa is a fantastic rock formation located on the Ghost Ranch property in Northern New Mexico. The area is rich in history and legends. It was told by cattle rustlers who lived along the Rito del Yeso stream that a mythical creature known as Vivaron lived on the Mesa. Every evening about sunset Vivaron (described as a 30 foot long rattlesnake) emerged looking for a good meal, this story provided privacy to the cattle rustlers from those seeking their missing and stolen cattle. Many years later paleontologists discovered an impressive fossil on the side of the Mesa which has now been named Vivaron haydeni. But, how then do we explain the many who went missing in search of their cattle?
