These towering cliffs are the base for the Chimney Rock formation at Ghost Ranch. Seen from this low angle just above Arroyo Seco creek and the Padre Jim Bridge; the perspective provides a direct view to the towers of El Monte Rojo (elevation 6,709’) the sister formation to Chimney Rock (el. 7,100’). Millions of years of geologic history rise before you; lowest and oldest being the 210 million year old (Ma) Chinle Formation, above it, the Entrada Sandstone (175 Ma), next is the Todilto Formation (160 (Ma) and the highest point visible here is Mesa Montosa (el. 8,01’) composed of the 145 Ma Morrrison Formation.
The road you are standing on is the original Ghost Ranch entrance road. An oxen skull hanging on a post in the center of this broad valley marked the entrance – Georgia O’Keeffe completed a drawing of the skull in 1930 and that image is now the logo for the ranch. Ghost Ranch was a dude ranch from 1929 – 1955, Carol Bishop Stanley initiated operations and later sold the dude ranch to Arthur Pack – who later gave the property to the Presbyterian Church. The ranch was the summer destination for the rich and famous of the 1920,s, 30,s, 40,s and 50’s; visitors included the Johnson and Johnson family, the Rockfeller’s, Ansel Adams, Rock Hudson and John Wayne. So many have travelled this road, so many stories can be told – the older and deeper history of the Native People’s and later, the Spanish – is even more fascinating than you can imagine.
