This photo was taken along the San Juan Riverwalk in Pagosa Springs. October is the culmination of the growing season for the cattails and they have done an excellent service to this environment as they have created an amazing habitat for the plants and animals that live here and for the migratory birds that pass through as well. Stroll along this path and you may see and hear Red-winged Blackbirds, Common Mergansers, Gadwalls, Canada Geese, Green – winged Teals, Mallards and more. Trails disappear into the reeds where muskrats, mule deer, skunks and raccoons travel.
Not only do cattails provide habitat for numerous species, they have historically been used by humans around the world as a food and fiber source. The rhizome (root) is nutrient rich and can be peeled and cooked like potatoes. The sprouts arising from the rhizome can be eaten as well and have been called Russian asparagus. The leaves are inedible but can be woven into baskets, mats and chair seats. Cattails are bioremediators and not only stabilize soil and wetland areas but also absorb pollutants, this plant is truly a gem.
