Scaled Quail are shy ground dwelling birds of the southwest. In the rainy season they pair off and make a shallow nest on the under the shelter of a shrub or, cholla cactus – the female typically taking charge of brooding the 5 – 16 eggs.
This photo was taken late in the year. The quail often frequent our water dish in large groups known as coveys – they are quite shy and dart for cover when they sense us watching. We see their small, three-toed tracks in our horses’ paddock where they forage for seeds and missed bits of grain. When startled, they rise off the ground, whirring their wings for a short and hurried flight to safety. It’s always a treat to see them or, hear their call of “pay-cos” or, “ chip-churr” as they move through the landscape.
