Horses are amazingly well adapted to the snow and cold. They begin to grow their winter coats in the early fall in response to changes in light. If the winter coat remains dry, the longer and more abundant hair will provide insulation and trap heat. Consuming hay generates heat as this roughage breaks down slowly in their digestive system, keeping them warm from the inside out. Other adaptations which which keep horses comfortable in the cold include an elongated head which allows cold air flowing into the nostrils to warm before entering the body and lower legs composed of tendon and bone which do not require the same blood flow needs as muscle.
I took this photo early in the morning, the horses had been gated in their sheltered paddocks overnight. As soon as I opened their gates, they ran and frolicked in the fresh snow – enthusiastically bucking and chasing each other for several minutes. I was able to snap this photo as they stopped to look and listen as the snow continued to fall.
