Petroglyphs can be found throughout New Mexico – simply put, they are etchings in rock – aka Rock Art. People have lived in central New Mexico for at least 10,000 years, well before the arrival of the Spanish in 1598. While we don’t know for certain what these etching mean, it is certainly a thrill to discover them and speculate as to what the message may be. Could this image be a zig zag interpretation of a water serpent or, is it a stylized interpretation of a one pole ladder? Because the image is geometric, it is commonly agreed that it is most likely from the Archaic period (5,500 B.C.E. – 600 C.E.). This petroglyph is remotely located within view of the famous Cerro Pedernal.
Some 40 miles east, you can visit the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project (the Wells Petroglyph Preserve) where you will find countless petroglyph’s similar to this. The recording of petroglyphs at MPPP has been ongoing since 2002 and well over 55,000 images have been recorded – it is one of the richest petroglyph sites in the Southwest. Arrange in advance for a tour, you will not be disappointed – the docents here will walk you through petroglyphs from the Archaic period through to present time.
