Often called century plants, agaves live 10 -30 years before producing a dramatic flowering, stalk of up to 20′, tall. The parent plant produces off shoots of new growth (called pups) – after flowering the parent plant dies. The foliage is blue in color with tough, sharp pointed leaves – the plant is round and quite handsome. Not only is this plant beautiful. Agaves have been a food source for humans for hundreds of years, the core of the plant is roasted and eaten. The plant has tough fibers that are extracted and used for twine and even making sandals and baskets. In addition, the Blue Agave from Mexico is famous as a source for mescal and tequila.
