Desert Four O’Clock
Mirabilis multiflora
This photo was taken three hours after sunrise at Ghost Ranch (elevation 6,500′) just north of Abiquiu, NM by 12 miles. I was driving in along the entrance road and was stopped in my tracks by the light illuminating through the foliage – I had to pause for a closer look.
Desert Four O’Clock is native to the southwest and thrives in gravely and sandy disturbed soil. June through September, the two feet high and three feet wide plants display vibrant trumpet shaped magenta flowers in the morning and afternoon. Sphinx moths and hummingbirds are attracted to this plant which is often found nestled at the foot of a pinion or, juniper tree. This surprising perennial is truly a gem of the high desert
