This photo was taken as I sat immersed in fragrant lavender, with bumblebees, honeybees and carpenter bees buzzing around me – pure sensation. The lavender was in full bloom and I was gathering the long, straight stems for a bouquet to bring inside the house, the fragrance was intoxicating. I ran my fingers down the stems to the point where the smooth leaves began and cut each stem individually to be sure that I had the maximum length. It took three rounds of gathering to make a substantial bouquet, approximately one hundred stems.
Lavender is in the mint family, it is renowned for it’s pleasant, potent fragrance – for centuries it has been used to heal, sooth and renew. The word lavender derives from the Latin ‘lavar’ to wash – the oil can be added to a bath for purification of body and mind. Native to the Mediterranean and North Africa, it is an herb and is now widely grown throughout the world. Insect pests such as fleas, mosquitoes and flies do not share our love of the lavender’s fragrance so, dab on some essential oil if you want to keep them away. With so many positive attributes, it’s a plant that you will want to add to your garden. Be sure to choose a cold hardy variety if you live in a place with chilly winters!
