Chimney Rock is a sandstone spire that rises to 7,100′, towering above the Piedra Lumbra valley and the Chama River basin. It is the most popular hiking destination at Ghost Ranch. Geologically it is part of the to the Entrada formation – a sedimentary layer composed of materials from about 170 million years ago.
There are three dominant geologic layers which make up the dramatic landscape surrounding Ghost Ranch:, the Chinle formation about 220 Ma and forms the red and grey striped base, the Entrada about 170 Ma and creates the dominant yellow and orange banded walls and the Todilto formation, about 150 Ma, which tops Kitchen Mesa with a grey- white band of limestone.
This stunning Chimney Rock at Ghost Ranch and the surrounding landscape is ancient and vast, dinosaurs roamed here – there is much to learn from the fossils they left behind!
