Pedernal is the dominant landmark of Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch, this dramatic flat topped formation rises 9,862’ and dominates the area with it’s distinctive shape. Known as Tsip’in to the native Tewa people – who formed tools, scrapers and points from the chert or, flint found near the peak. The Spanish began settling the area of Abiquiu in 1734 with the construction of the Santa Rosa de Lima church on the banks of the Chama River, they called the mountain Cerro Pedernal or, flint hill.
Historians, artists and outdoor adventurers are drawn to this place. Georgia O’Keeffe, the famous modernist painter has made Pedernal known to many through her series of paintings of its vast stark form. Her twenty eight paintings depict many moods of Pedernal spanning the seasons and her years of observation.
Geographically, Pedernal rises above the Piedra Lumbre basin or, “valley of the shining stone” (a reference to the bright, sandstone cliffs) and forms the north western boundary of the Jemez Mountains (which are volcanic in origin). The geology of this area is rich! This is the south eastern edge of the Colorado Plateau which reaches north and west into Colorado, Utah and Arizona spanning 240,000 square miles and encompassing some of the most spectacular National Parks of the United States including Bryce, Zion and the Grand Canyon.
