This resilient plant flourishes in the High Dessert of Northern New Mexico where it experiences dramatic shifts in weather through the year – summer temps up to 100*, winter temps down to 0 and at times no moisture for weeks on end. The leaves are fibrous and durable, the native people used them for countless generations for weaving baskets, cordage and sandals. The magnificent flowers bloom in mid-May and by late summer the mature fruit is ripe. Left undisturbed, the pods dry and open dramatically to expose the small black seeds within.
