This photo was taken at Ghost Ranch in early May. Perky Sue is one of the first yellow flowers to bloom in the spring and is an important food source for pollinators. It is a perennial native and is found in open areas of the Southwest in pinion – juniper environments, foothill scrub and ponderosa pine forests 5,000 – 7,500’. It blooms April through September and is typically just 6 – 10” high; the bright yellow daisy like flowers crown long, leafless stems. Perky Sue has fuzzy leaves which appear to be silver as they are covered with fine hairs known as trichomes – these hairs provide shade for the foliage, preventing dehydration, and also serve to protect the plant from predation from insects.
Perky Sue is a life medicine for the Navajo and is used in several ways, lotions and other preparations are made to treat eczema, heartburn and gastrointestinal issues. The Navajo believe the plant provides protection from evil spirits, no doubt such a cheerful, sturdy flowering plant can only be good for the soul.
