Venus and the crescent moon juxtapose Pedernal in this image. In Abiquiu New Mexico, we often enjoy a  crystal clear sky – during the day, we revel in the soothing azure blue while at night we relish the  brilliant stars. The silhouette of Pedernal can be seen from great distances, in this image, the 9,862’ mountain is just 24 miles away.

This is the mountain that Georgia O’Keeffe so love that she painted it at least 28  times between 1936 and 1958. Miss O’Keeffe first arrived to New Mexico in 1929 and would have had her first long view of the the mountain from Taos, later she found her way to Ghost Ranch northwest of Abiquiu where she lived for many years with Pedernal dominating the view in her “backyard”.  I do not doubt that she enjoyed the view of the crescent moon and Venus many times.
