The Road to Pedernal at Ghost Ranch Greeting Cards

Pedernal is the iconic flat topped mountain that rises dramatically above the Piedra Lumbra basin south of Ghost Ranch. The top of the mountain is 9, 866’ – it’s formation occurred as the Jemez mountains developed over millions of years; the result of complex geologic action in response to volcanic activity and uplift. For the native peoples, the mountain top was a spiritual destination as well as a source of chert – also known as flint – an essential material used both as a fire-starter and fashioned into projectile points and tools. It is possible climb to the top but it is not an easy venture given the elevation, access, exposure and changeable weather.
Visible from as far away as Taos New Mexico, Pedernal dominates the view to the south of Ghost Ranch. When Georgia O’Keeffe found her way to the ranch in 1934, the place a “dude ranch” a destination for wealthy travelers from the East Coast who were in search of western adventures. Miss O’Keeffe was not seeking this type of experience, she was looking for solitude and inspirational landscapes – Ghost Ranch fit this need. After a few summers as a guest of the dude ranch, a house and a few acres became available; Miss O’Keeffe purchased the property in 1940 calling it El Rancho de los Burros. This became her summer home for the rest of her life and Pedernal her dominant view to the south and subject of more than two dozen, now famous paintings.
