Chama River Fall Colors Giclée Gallery Board
Photo by: Karen Butts October 24. 2018 Abiquiu New Mexico
The Chama River is a major tributary of the Rio Grande. It originates in the San Jaun mountains, just north of the New Mexico border in Colorado. The river flows 130 miles to its junction with the Rio Grande. At the location where this photo was taken, the Chama has traveled 90 miles. This beautiful oxbow is a favorite spot for bald eagles in the winter. The tight bend in the river at the top of the image was used as a camp in the movie Comanche Moon, a prequel to Lonesome Dove filmed here and in the surrounding area in 2007.
This same perspective inspired Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings of the river including Chama River, Ghost Ranch 1937. I hope that you are drawn in as well.
