This moth traveled far; its tattered wings tell a story.  I took this photograph on the flagstone portal in front of the main building at Ghost Ranch. Cecropia is one of the largest moths in north America, females can have a wingspan of 5 – 7’. Female moths one hundred eggs which hatch as caterpillars. The caterpillars eat a variety of leaves including ash, birch, poplar, maple, elm, wild cherry and apple. While the voracious caterpillar may not be welcome, it is interesting to observe it – look for yellow, blue, and orange tubercles (bumps) on a smooth green body.
