This legacy cactus has survived many decades, it lives at 6,400’ in a dry high desert environment on a southwest facing slope – blooming dramatically with just 10” of annual precipitation. This native cactus blooms for just two weeks and makes a stunning display. The Black-chinned hummingbird is drawn to the scarlet flowers and feasts on small insects that are attracted to them as well. While this hummingbird will nest for the spring and summer then migrate to Mexico for the winter, the cactus will stolidly bear the extreme temperatures of the high desert summer and winter to bloom again in the spring. They make a great pair don’t they?
