Sacred Datura
Datura wrightii

Family: Nightshade (Solanaceae)
AKA: Thorn Apple, Jimsonweed, Moonflower
Photo taken on: July 10, 2017
Location:  Abiquiu, NM
Life Zones: Plains to foothills
Habitat: Disturbed areas

This plant is in the same family as potatoes and tomatoes, The dramatic flower blooms mostly at night and produces a heavy, sweet fragrance. The flower is white – some varieties have a lavender tinted leading edge – it is funnel shaped, 5”-7” long and 3”-4” across.  The green leaves are alternate and velvety with lobed or toothed margins.  Once pollinated by the hummingbird sized White Lined Sphinx moth, flowers become round thorny fruits filled with numerous flat brown seeds. All parts of this plant are poisonous and potentially psychoactive – not to be toyed with ! – just touching the plant can cause dermatitis to those with sensitive skin.

Georgia O’Keeffe famously painted this flower several times. Her Jimson Weed/White Flower No.1, 1932 sold in 2014 for $44.4 million dollars at auction.
