Photo taken on: July 1. 2021
Location:  Abiquiu, NM
Life Zones: Plains to foothills

Habitat: Pinion Juniper and disturbed open areas A tree like cactus which grows to 8 feet with spiny, cylindrical fleshy stems. The spines are finely barbed, making them difficult to remove should you get one in your skin. The flowers are purple, magenta or. a shockingly bright fuchsia in color. The cone shaped fruit is yellow and is not highly desirable but is eaten by birds. deer, pronghorn sheep and other animals when other food is scarce, The fruit remains on the plant through the winter and is often mistaken for flowers. Native people ate the flower buds raw, stewed or, dried and ground into a flour as they are high in calcium. When the stems die, they leave a beautiful lattice shaped pattern. This cactus is abundant in areas where over gazing has occurred.
