Narrow Leaf Yucca
Yucca baileyi

AKA: Alpine Yucca, Bailey’s Narrow Leaf Yucca
Photo taken on: May 8, 2021
Location:  Abiquiu, NM
Life Zones: Plains to foothills
Habitat: Dry woodlands and slopes
Fibrous green leaves are narrow, and sharp-pointed. This plant sometimes forms colonies of rosettes. The flower stem grows to about 2 feet tall, rising from below the leaf tips. The flowers have purplish bracts and are ivory colored and bell shaped when open.  Geographically differentiated, this species is a more diminutive sized plant, with larger fruit and narrower leaves than others in the genus. All parts of the plant were used by the native peoples for their day-to-day existence – the fibrous leaves made sturdy sandals that are still found today throughout the southwest at archeological sites.
