This wildflower group is composed of hardy natives that tolerate drought and difficult conditions. These familiar wildflowers are often seen along roadsides providing welcome color and contrast as they emerge after summer rains.

Globemallow has been used as medicine and food by humans through millennia – pollen grains and globe mallow plant remnants have been found at Chaco Canyon both in the kivas and in food preparation areas. The Navajo used a cold infusion of Goldenweed as an eyewash and a made a poultice for treatment of boils and sores. The Acoma ground purple aster petals and mixed them with white clay to use as a dye for wool, while the Hopi used purple aster as a stimulant. Whether used for food, medicine or, just appreciating their beauty this trio is a winner!
