Looking East from Abiquiu Giclée Canvas
PHOTOGRAPH DETAILS
Across the broad valley of the Espanola Basin and East of Abiquiu, a dramatic view of the southern Rocky Mountains can be seen. Known locally as the Sangre de Cristo mountains,, these mountains rise rapidly to tremendous heights of 13,000’ or more! Find a comfortable spot and observe the sunset – you may be lucky and see the light reflected to reveal a kaleidoscope of pleasing pastel colors.
This valley, formed some 35 mya, is one of several basins which rest along the north/south Rio Grande Rift – extending from southern Colorado through New Mexico. Simply stated, the Rio Grand Rift is a giant tear in the earth – the result of pulling and stretching of vast geologic proportions or, tectonic plate movement. The Rio Grande River drains through this crevice, creating a natural pathway for humans and animals alike. Take in the vista and survey the clouds as they rapidly transform revealing mysterious shapes that fuel the imagination.
