I took this [Native Bee and Dandelion] photo while walking along a path through a wetland adjacent the San Juan River in Pagosa Springs. I had already seen a few dandelions blooming and honeybees enjoying their nectar. This bee is different, it’s a native bee – it lacks the familiar fuzz of the honeybee. So I took a closer look and in the process, learned about our native bees. This native bee relies on a variety of flowers for success. 75% of fruits and vegetables grown in the United States are pollinated by both wild bees and honeybees. Be aware, many native bees nest in the ground so pay attention as you walk through undisturbed areas – you may spot an entrance to a small colony. Keep an eye out for these “locals” and give them a helping hand when you can.
There is much we can do to support native bees and honeybees, most importantly to observe and not disturb. Proactively, we can scatter seed, add flowering perennials to our gardens – and when we go walking in dry areas, to share a sip of water from that water bottle we are carrying, with flowering native plants we see. All of these actions will ensure the success of both bee and flower. When choosing flowers and shrubs to plant in your yard, select a variety of flower shapes and colors to benefit a broad range of pollinators. Notice bloom times; look for plants that bloom early in the spring or, late in the growing season to provide the greatest benefit and keep in mind that native plants support native insects. Be sure to supply a shallow water dish in the garden – with pebbles for landing/drinking spots – to keep your pollinators hydrated.
